How do I apply?
First, please visit our minimum requirements to ensure you meet our mandatory requirements. Once you are sure you meet those standards, create a profile which will allow you to upload your required documents for starting the process.




The application process can take anywhere from 3 to 12 months depending on the needs of the department, the time of year, and the number of applications we receive at a given time.
Any basic/standard first aid course (with CPR) through a certified organization such as the Red Cross or St. John’s will do. The CPR certification should include infants.
It is designed to be grade 12 equivalent and it is not intended that most applicants would need to study, however, there are various study guides available online.
The Ethos Intake Exam assesses practical skill sets that police officers must use on a regular basis while performing their duties. The exam is divided into four modules, is three hours in length, and is marked out of 100. A score of 60% (60/100) is required to pass.
The four modules assess the following areas:
- Memory and observation skills (20 marks)
- Reading comprehension and critical thinking skills (25 marks)
- Summarizing skills (10 marks)
- Writing and editing skills (45 marks)
Requests to rewrite the intake exam will be considered on an individual basis, upon the written request of the applicant.
The Ethos Intake Exam will be the only form of exam that may be considered for transfer by the recruiter. The applicant will need to complete a Consent to Collection and Disclosure form in order for the other police agency to transfer the Ethos Intake Exam.
We will transfer an official POPAT time from the applicant it was completed recently. The applicant will need to complete a Consent to Collection, Use and Disclosure form.
Yes. The only requirement is that completion of the eye examination be within the last six months.
Yes. You cannot have a criminal conviction for which a pardon has not been granted.
No. You will receive the training you need at the police academy.
Not necessarily. We will examine this on a case-by-case basis. Factors that influence our decision are the type of drug(s) used; the amount/frequency of use; and how recently the drugs were used.
The Port Moody Police Department is committed to hiring the best applicants, but in reviewing applications we consider the whole applicant. Life experience is an important element of a well-rounded officer. Having made some questionable decisions in the past does not necessarily prevent you from being hired by the Port Moody Police Department.
It is vital, however, that you are completely honest in your application. The application process is rigorous and any omissions will almost certainly come to light during the process. Your honesty will better help us assess your competitiveness as a candidate; failure to include important information could lead to automatic disqualification.
Fees
No. The Port Moody Police Department does not require applicants to pay for any part of the application process.
Tuition for the JIBC Police Academy recruit training is approximately $15,315.00 and may increase for coming classes. Tuition is the responsibility of the recruit.
Yes, the JIBC tuition is tax deductible.
Fees are due on the first day of training at the JIBC Police Academy. You can pay by cheque made out to the Justice Institute of British Columbia, or by credit card.
Yes. The Port Moody Police Department has made arrangements with a local lender. If the recruit applicant receives a signed offer of police recruit employment, and a reasonable credit score, they will loan the recruit applicant the tuition which is then paid back in installments over time.

You start receiving pay on the day you are sworn in.
Yes. You are paid at the rate of a fifth class Constable.
Applicants hired, either as a recruit or experienced police officer, will begin contributing to their pension plan on their start date. Those already with a current pension, they will need to inquire with the Municipal Pension Plan to determine whether they can transfer their pension plan.
