- Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Minimum age of 19 years
- Grade 12 education or equivalent
- Medically suitable for the occupation, including meeting minimum vision and hearing requirements
- Physically fit, able to pass the Police Officers’ Physical Abilities Test (POPAT). The POPAT is a job-related physical abilities test designed to simulate a critical incident where a police officer chases, controls and apprehends a suspect. It measures physical fitness (including strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance), and motor fitness (including power, agility and speed).
- Valid Class 5 British Columbia driver’s licence (or equivalent) with a responsible driving history
- Valid First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificates which will not expire for at least eight months from the application date. An eight-hour first aid course is sufficient
- Good moral character, capable of passing background investigation/security clearance
- Please note that applicants will not be considered for employment while facing criminal charges or charges under another federal statute. Applicants must not have been convicted of a criminal offence or charged under another federal statute unless a pardon has been granted
Preferred Qualifications
We are seeking individuals who not only meet the minimum requirements but also bring additional skills and qualifications to strengthen our team. If you possess any of these qualifications, you will be a valuable asset to our department as we work together to protect and serve the community.
- 30 credits or more of post-secondary education from an accredited college or university in any academic discipline is desirable, but heavy consideration will be given to other training received and life skills in lieu of post-secondary education. Such training and skills must be verifiable
- Volunteer or work experience in a law enforcement-related field (e.g. Special Municipal Constable, Operational Support Officer, Community Safety Officer, Victim Services Worker, Reserve/Auxiliary Constable, Community Crime Prevention Program volunteer, Sheriff, Corrections worker, CBSA Enforcement Officer, active security positions involving conflict resolution, etc)
- Knowledge of a second language or culture
- Work experience involving a position of responsibility and/or involving significant interaction with the public in challenging circumstances
- Other accomplishments
The same standards apply to those applicants who have had laser eye surgery, except that there is a waiting period of 30 days from the date the last eye was corrected for the purpose of assessing both vision and stability.
Your vision test must be submitted with your Employment Application Package. It may be on the PMPD Vision Report Form or on another form that addresses all of the requirements set out above.
Vision Requirements
- Binocular vision, with uncorrected visual acuity of not less than 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye
- Corrected visual acuity of not less than 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other eye, and 20/20 with both eyes open
- Normal colour vision, able to pass Farnsworth test with no more than one mistake
- Normal binocular vision
Hearing Requirements
Applicants must meet the following standard: “all pure tone thresholds are 25dB or less in each ear at each frequency in the range of 500-3000 Hz.”
You are not required to submit a hearing test at the time of initial application.
